NINTH INTERNATIONAL SAXOPHONE FESTIVAL – BELGRADE SAXPERIENCE 2022
The Ninth international saxophone festival in Serbia – Belgrade SAXperience will be held from September 27th to September 29th in Belgrade.
For the 9th iteration of the festival, I wanted a local composer to write a brand new virtuoso piece for saxophone and piano, as there is a general lack of compositions for classical saxophone in Serbia. This is why I contacted one of our most renowned composers, Ivan Jevtic, with whom I had collaborated many times, and who had previous experience in writing saxophone pieces. He had already authored the “Concerto for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra” which premiered at the first year of the festival, in 2014, performed by the RTS Symphony Orchestra and myself as the soloist. This year, the festival will open with a premiere of Jevtic’s new composition, featuring a prominent French saxophonist and a professor at the Music Conservatory of Versailles, Nikolas Arsenijevic, and our pianist, the masterful Uki Ovaskainen.
While drafting the lineup for this year’s events, we were guided by a desire to show the audience the history and circumstances that had led to the creation of the saxophone, which is why we invited the French trio Aeris. In addition to a saxophone and a piano, the group also boasts a saxhorn — yet another invention by Adolphe Sax. And, of course, we try to keep up with the trends which is why every year we bring in popular local jazz bands, such as this year’s Bojana Stamenov Soul Trio, to showcase the novelties on the jazz scene in the region. The band will play some of their most famous jazz and blues songs at the Cvijeta Zuzoric Art Pavilion in Kalemegdan.
Milan Savic, the Belgrade Saxperience festival director
Aimed at decentralization of the culture, the broadest audience accross Serbia will have the opportunity to hear the top world saxophonists, within the tour Saxperience on Tour. It is important to point out the International Festival And Summer School Summer SAXperience and Winter School Ski SAXperience on Zlatibor mountain. The goal is to provide the opportunity to students to learn from the most prominent world saxophonists while enjoying the summer and winter atmosphere, as well as to create friendship which will hopefully result in their future professional cooperation. Program for education of the youngest audience is Mini SAXperience, which provides the opportunity to learn interactivly all about this instrument from our youngest performers.
The festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia.
